The Mother of All Fiestas
The Fair of August or Feria of Málaga is for centuries the biggest fair of the Mediterranean. Its origin lies in the recapture of the islamic Málaga due to the socalled “Catholic Kings“ of Castile in august 1487. In the course of time it developed to be a big event that is also used to present local products such as the typical sweet wines of Málaga.
This fair is the highlight of the summer! Everyone is celebrating, the inhabitants of the city as well as plenty of tourists. With the realisation of this festival Málaga demonstrates year by year why it is rightly the center of one of the most important holiday areas of entire Europe. It is a great opportunity to enjoy the hospitable and cosmpopolitan character of Málaga.
This weeklong festival is opened every year by the welcoming speech of the city´s mayor. It continues with a form of declaration of love to Málaga, its habitants and its conventions. It goes on with a big firework display and free live concerts until the dawn.
The following days the streets are filled with up to a million of people from Spain and all around the world. During the day you can enjoy the culinary specialities that are eoffered in plenty of booths in the ntire city centre. Furthermore here are flamenco shows, live music, performances of various folklore groups and the like. In the streets there is a lot of Rumba and Flamenco music but also Salsa and Reggaeton which animates to dance together with the people.
A bit outside of the centre is located the “Recinto Ferial“, the further important location of the festival. During the week of the festival all local busses run in the space of 10 minutes to and from the fair groun, all around the clock.
One part of the Recinto Ferial is filled with typical fair attractions such as roller coasters and a big wheel. The other part of the area is litterd with hundreds of pavilions, where you can have dinner. In the night everything turns out to be something like a huge disco area.
The festival is accompanied by a dissolved and peaceful atmosphere. Malagueños and visitants want to spend a good time together.
